From a 10 cm difference between his legs to restoring balance
The single-leg lengthening story of our patient from Palestine: six years of searching, one femoral LON surgery in Istanbul, and the day the raised-sole shoe went into the cupboard for good.

Medically reviewedThis story and its medical details were reviewed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yunus Öç, Orthopaedics and Traumatology, who performed the surgery. Last reviewed: October 2026.
The 10 centimetres nobody saw, but he lived with every day
When we talk about a small difference in leg length, it is hard for someone who has never experienced it to understand what it does to everyday life. Now imagine that difference is not small. Our patient from Palestine had lived with a 10 cm leg length discrepancy for years.
From the outside, a leg length difference looks like a problem that mainly affects the way someone walks. In reality it reaches much further: the pelvis tilts, the spine compensates, the hip and knee of the longer leg carry more load, and pain settles in the lower back. Walking longer distances, playing sport, standing for a full working day: each of these became a calculation.
He did not talk about it. For a long time he carried the pain quietly and arranged his life around it.
One leg 10 cm shorter
Pelvic tilt, back pain, a raised-sole shoe to stand level.
Both legs equal
Ordinary shoes, a level pelvis, an even stride.

I was experiencing a lot of pain, but I did not tell anyone about it. It was like that for a long time.
Our patient, in his own wordsWhen choosing shoes becomes part of the problem
Because of the 10 cm difference, he could not simply buy a pair of shoes he liked. One shoe always needed a thick raised sole, and he wore it almost every day, summer and winter alike. Imagine a shoe with a 10 cm built-up sole in the heat of a Middle Eastern summer. Formal shoes for a wedding, sandals at the beach, trainers for football: none of them were really an option.
The psychological and social side weighed as much as the physical one. He described the feeling of being looked at, of people assuming he was less capable than he was, of avoiding situations where the shoe would be noticed. The difference was not only in his legs; it had settled into how he moved through the world.

You feel that people might see you as less capable than they are.
Our patient, on living with the differenceA six-year search that ended in Istanbul
The decision to have surgery was not made quickly. Before he became a Wanna Be Taller patient, he had been looking for treatment for about six years, starting in Palestine and widening the search country by country. Some of the options he found were very expensive. Others could not show him a comparable case. For a 10 cm discrepancy, he wanted a team that had treated a difference this large before.
He found Wanna Be Taller through social media, read the published patient experiences, watched the videos and then contacted us directly. The first step was the same as for every patient: an X-ray review by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yunus Öç, who confirmed that the discrepancy was in the femur and that a single femoral lengthening could close the full 10 cm.

Femoral discrepancy confirmed; LON chosen for 10 cm in one leg.
Femoral LON at the contracted JCI accredited hospital, 4 day stay.
About 1 mm a day with physiotherapy and fortnightly surgeon visits.
This time the goal was not to be taller
When limb lengthening is mentioned, height is usually the first thing people think of. This case was different. The aim was not to add centimetres to his height but to bring the shorter leg up to the longer one, so that his body could finally stand on two equal legs.
That changes the surgical plan. In cosmetic lengthening both legs are lengthened symmetrically. Here only the shorter femur was operated on, and the target was fixed by anatomy: exactly the amount that would make both legs the same length. The LON method was chosen because it allows partial weight bearing during lengthening and is well suited to a large single-segment gain.
A 10 cm lengthening in one femur is at the upper end of what is done in a single surgery. It requires a flexible patient, disciplined daily physiotherapy and close follow-up of the nerves and soft tissues. The surgeon set the pace individually and adjusted it as the X-rays came in.

10 cm of lengthening: the goal he had waited years for
Surgery day was the day the change he had been looking for finally began. After four days at the hospital he moved to the recovery accommodation, and the lengthening started: a daily adjustment, daily physiotherapy, dressing care, X-rays on the surgeon’s schedule and a visit from Dr. Öç roughly every two weeks.
He is honest about the hard parts. Some stages were painful, the stretching of muscle and nerve over a 10 cm gain is demanding, and there were days when the end felt far away. The physiotherapy team and the patient representative were with him through each of them.
And then the X-ray showed it: both femurs the same length. Ten centimetres, in one leg, exactly as planned. The raised-sole shoe went into the cupboard.

The difficulties I went through to achieve the result I wanted were worth it.
Our patient, after reaching 10 cmYou can hear this story best from him
We could write pages about his journey. Instead, he tells it himself: the years of searching, the shoe, the surgery, the days that were hard, and what it feels like to stand on two equal legs.
The patient who once searched for other people’s stories now shares his own
Six years ago he was looking for someone with a case like his. He wanted to know whether a 10 cm difference could really be corrected, what the process felt like, and whether it was worth it. He found very little.
That is why he agreed to share his story. He knows there is someone, somewhere, wearing a raised-sole shoe in the summer heat and searching late at night for an experience similar to theirs. His message to them is simple: it can be done, it is demanding, and it is worth it, provided you choose a medical team that has treated cases like yours before.

If you live with a leg length discrepancy, the first step is an X-ray review. It tells you which bone carries the difference, how much can be corrected in one surgery and which method fits. From there, the plan is yours.
Leg length discrepancy surgery, briefly
Can a 10 cm leg length difference be corrected in one surgery?
In this case, yes: the full 10 cm was gained in a single femoral LON lengthening. Whether that is possible for you depends on which bone carries the difference, your bone quality, soft tissue flexibility and age. The surgeon decides after an X-ray review, and in some cases the correction is planned in two stages.
Is only the shorter leg operated on?
Yes. In single-leg lengthening only the shorter femur or tibia is lengthened, until it matches the longer leg. Total height increases by the amount of the discrepancy, but the aim is balance, not height.
Why was the LON method chosen?
LON combines an external fixator during lengthening with an internal nail afterwards. It allows partial weight bearing during the lengthening phase and suits a large single-segment gain. Fitbone and Precice 2 are also performed by our surgeon; the method is chosen case by case.
How long did the process take?
At roughly 1 mm a day, 10 cm of lengthening takes about 100 days, followed by consolidation. The patient stayed in Istanbul for the lengthening phase with daily physiotherapy and fortnightly surgeon visits, then continued follow-up remotely.
