Under general anesthesia: the femur or tibia is cut, an internal nail (and in LON, an external fixator) is placed. Lengthening starts about 5 days after surgery at 1 mm/day, followed by a consolidation period. Devices are removed once the bone has healed.

Healthy adults aged 18–55 with closed growth plates — for medical reasons (leg length discrepancy, deformities) or aesthetic ones. Serious conditions such as uncontrolled heart disease or diabetes rule it out; eligibility is confirmed with examinations and X-rays.

X-ray review for proportion planning, detailed blood tests, EKG and anesthesia evaluation. Chronic conditions may require extra tests. The surgery date is set only after all results are approved.

Tibia: less pain, more mobility, but less lengthening (5–8 cm) and higher nerve risk. Femur: more lengthening (6–10 cm), faster healing, lower infection risk, but more pain. Your goals and anatomy decide; discuss both in consultation.

A single surgery achieves 6–9 cm; with a second surgery the total can reach 12–16 cm. By method: Precice up to 8–8.5 cm, LON up to 9–10 cm. An 8 cm gain takes ~85 days of lengthening; 10 cm about 105 days.

Yes — the lengthening amount is planned from your leg-to-torso ratio and the golden ratio before surgery, so legs stay in harmony with your torso and arm span. Gradual lengthening lets the body adapt naturally.

Internal methods (Precice, Fitbone) leave only small incision scars that fade over time. LON leaves marks at fixator pin sites. Silicone strips, creams or laser treatment can reduce visibility further.

About 4 days in hospital; lengthening starts day 5 at 1 mm/day (8 cm ≈ 85 days). Unassisted walking typically 2–3 months after lengthening ends; daily life gradually returns from month 4; full recovery and sports in 9–12 months.

With LON, assisted walking starts during lengthening. With internal methods, a wheelchair protects the healing bone during lengthening. Most patients walk unassisted around 5–6 months after surgery.

As with any surgery there are risks: infection, delayed bone healing, nerve irritation, muscle tightness, blood clots and psychological strain.
