But acknowledging the surgery process and the technique that is used is just as important as the cost. In this text, we will share the most current surgery prices, surgery methods and the points that should be taken into account during the process with you. Also, we will be mentioning the other topics you may be wondering about such as the prices of limb lengthening surgery and insurance coverage.

1- Factors that affect the limb-lengthening surgery

The cost of limb lengthening surgery may vary according to many factors and becomes different according to the special needs of every individual. Below are the basic factors that affect the cost of the surgery.

The used method

There are differences in prices between Precice 2.2, Lon and other techniques. Since precice 2.2 is a technique that is done completely from inside it is less painful and less risky of infection; therefore, it is more expensive. Lon method is a technique that uses both internal and external fixator devices and generally it is more affordable. The method that is chosen is the most important factor in determining the cost.

The expertness and experience of the surgeon

The surgeons who are experienced and known among their area may demand high prices. This plays a critical role in terms of the success of the surgery and the decrease of complication risks. An experienced surgeon can offer less complication and a faster recovery process, which is a reason of the increase in cost but at the same time it means safer and more successful result.

Hospital and Accommodation

The quality of the hospital that the surgery is conducted at, the equipment that is used and the patient services that are offered are an important factor in determining the cost. Likewise, the options for accommodation after the surgery such as hotel, private house etc. affect the total cost.  Everything included accommodation packages can be preferred since it provides comfort and quick recovery after the surgery, but it will increase the cost.

Additional services and following examinations

Additional services such as physiotherapy, regular examinations, x-rays and medicines can increase the total cost. Especially physiotherapy after surgery is critical for the healthy recovery of the bones and tissues and this is generally included in the cost.

The amount of lengthening

The amount of lengthening does not directly affect the cost of surgery because the amount is determined according to the preferences of the patient and it is decided with the doctor during the process. But demanding more lengthening might increase the number of physiotherapies, medical dressing and x-ray throughout the process. These additional needs cause the cost to increase. For example, the goal of 8 cm lengthening may require more physiotherapy and medical follow up compared to 5 cm lengthening, which means additional costs.

2- Methods of lengthening in terms of price-performance

Different techniques are used in limb-lengthening surgery and these techniques directly affect the cost of surgery. Below are the most common methods and their effects on the costs.

Precice 2.2 method

Features: precice 2.2 is a method where the lengthening is done completely from the inside. A special nail that is placed inside the bone during the surgery is lengthened with the help of a magnetic device. In this method, no external fixators are used, which provides less scar and more comfortable recovery process.

Effect of price: since precice 2.2 is an advanced and more comfortable technique, the cost is higher than other techniques. One of the main reasons for its high cost is the fact that the nails are produced with advanced technology. Its preferred because it offers high security, less complication and fast recovery.

Lon method

Features: Lon method is a technique where both external and internal fixators are used together. While a nail is placed inside the bone, lengthening is done from the outside with the help of a fixator. Even though this method requires a more complex process than Precice 2.2, it is more affordable than it.

Effect of price: Lon method is more affordable because of the cost of external fixators. Additionally, it has many advantages such as the early removal of the external fixators, assisted walking during the lengthening process and going back to daily life in a little time. It’s the most preferred method by the patients because it is more appealing in terms of price-performance rate.

Ilizarov method

Features: the Ilizarov method is a technique that is done with external fixators only. In this method, a fixating system in the shape of a hoop is placed around the bone and the bone gets gradually lengthened. Generally requires longer recovery process and the risk of complication is higher than the other methods.

Effect of price: Ilizarov method is one of the most affordable methods. But the long usage of external fixators might extent the recovery process and delay the time of going back to daily life for the patient. Even though it is seen as the more economical option, it has some disadvantages in terms of comfort.

The preference of Lon method at the rate of price-performance

Lon method is the most preferred method in terms of cost-performance balance. Being affordable and offering the possibility to recover quickly, make this method appealing for many patients. The usage of internal and external fixators together helps achieving quicker results and patients can go on with less risks of complication in the process after the surgery.

What’s the most height someone can gain from femur and tibia surgery with lon method. And can you do both at same time to save on lengthening time?

    • WannaBeTaller - Makbule, March 13, 2023 @ 11:50 am Yanıtla

Hello, thanks for your comment. The maximum height from Femurs with a single surgery is 8 cm, and 7 cm from Tibias. Quadrilateral surgery is not performed by our doctor because it is too risky. For example, there is a high risk of embolism, and long duration of anesthesia and there can be multitrauma in the legs. Thus, the second limb lengthening surgery can be done at least a month apart. Or ideally 3/6/12 months after the first surgery.

Does the LON method hurt a lot, how long is the total stay in Istanbul, Do i have to travel back to remove the device , Can I travel alone or do I require somebody with me because I want to keep the surgery private

    • WannaBeTaller - Makbule, February 27, 2023 @ 6:34 pm Yanıtla

Hello, thanks for your comment. Indeed the LON method can be challenging, especially on the femurs compared to the Precice 2. However, since the pain is quite subjective, every patient has a different experience regarding the pain. The doctor highly recommends patients stay here for 3 months in general in order to be followed up closely. You can travel here with ease of mind. Our staff is already at the hotel during the daytime and provides qualified services. Besides, during he hospitalization process, we provide a caretaker to take care of them.

I was born with no right hand and half a forearm..I want to do the limb lengthening surgery

    • WannaBeTaller - Makbule, January 18, 2023 @ 11:44 am Yanıtla

Hello, you need to see an orthopedic surgeon at the nearest hospital and get an X-ray done. Based on the clinical results, they may suggest you prosthesis because limb lengthening cannot be performed.

  • Aki shah , October 23, 2022 @ 7:37 am Yanıtla

Looking for precise stryde tibia and lon for femur. Quadrilateral limb lengthening.

    • WannaBeTaller - Makbule, October 24, 2022 @ 5:26 pm Yanıtla

Hello, thanks for your comment. Quadrilateral surgery is not performed by our doctor simultaneously. He prefers to do the second lengthening at least a month after the first surgery. The reason why he does not prefer it is the duration of anesthesia, multiple trauma, and risk of embolism.
